Well this week the legs have felt unusual. It may be a reaction to last week when I got up to 80km. Perhaps I needs some real pull back anyway I had two complete rest days and another day when I ran a total of only 4km!!!
I finished the week with about 50km after completing 18km on Sunday morning in very humid/muggy conditions.
This week I will be looking to get back up to about 80km again.

Wrong time of the year to be losing weight!!!!
Well I am happy to report that I have made a bit of progress with the kms and last week I knocked out 80km!!! The sad thing is my waistline isnt shrinking and with so many BBQ's/xmas functions at this time of the year, I might have to go on one of them new years resolution diets!
Anyway the last 2 weeks have looked like this:
Week ending 4th December - A bit of pull back and reduced the kms to 60
Week ending 11th December - Back to increasing the mileage and finished with 80kms. First time I have done that much for several months.
I also attended the Cool Running Melbourne Xmas BBQ on this day after running 20km with the group. The run/BBQ was organised by Tony Dell who is a very popular character on the Melbourne running scene. I have attached a pic below. I am on the far right in the green.

Gold Coast Holiday and then back home.
Well I haven't updated this blog for more than 3 weeks!
The last 3 weeks have looked like this:
Week 1 - Gold Coast holiday. Ran a total of 60kms even though it was extremely humid. I tried running early in the morning, at night and during the middle of the day but I could not escape the humidity at any time and I always returned pouring with sweat. The highlight for me was running the 10km stretch from Burleigh Heads to Surfers Paradise, just as they do in the Coolangatta Gold which is one of my favourite sporting events.
As usual when I am on holidays, I ate and drank everything in sight so the belly began to grow!
Week 2 - Back home and managed a total of 64kms. Didnt do any speed work, just focused on building back up consistently and trying to do some sort of run every day of the week.
Week 3 - Same as week 2 but this time I managed 70kms!!! First time above 70kms for several months. Things are on the improve. Let's hope I can carry this momentum through to the following weeks.
Sadly at the moment I weigh 77kg so I had better get my act together and lose some weight fast! I will be returning to doing some light speed work this week but overall just trying to build my weekly mileage up and then trying to hold a good level. I am going to aim for about 75km this week.

One step forward, two steps back...
Well.. what can I say? Things seem to be going from bad to worse. After being sidelined for a week with the flu, I managed about 40km for the following week and then have a guess what happened? Yep I got sick again! This time it was not as bad but it still put me out of action for about 3 days meaning that once again my weekly mileage ends up being about 40km. I am a long way off where I want to be but I suppose I will just have to be patient. The last six months have been an absolute horror stretch with a combination of minor things just adding up to play havoc with my training.
Next week I will be going to the Gold Coast for a short holiday. This will give me the chance to do some nice relaxing running however as we know, the kms have to be built up slowly so I can only hope for about 50km. Its frustrating but as long as I am sensible, I will remain injury free and over the long term, the training load will build up and when I hit 100km per week, I believe I will be certain to run some serious PB's.
Also last night I finally uploaded part 1 of my own amateur Melbourne Marathon video. Here is the url http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoHLZyy8Ug4&feature=feedu

More frustration
Well another setback! Just as I was confident of having a good week and pumping out 70km, I get struck down with the flu which as sidelined me for a few days. After all the other setbacks I have had this year with work, house renovations, adjusting to different sessions etc I was confident that I was going to be able to make some progress with the kms this week. Oh well it wasn't to be so I will just have to sit patiently while I wait for the legs to be ready to handle the bigger load.
Tomorrow I will be giving the track a miss so I will have to wait a while to make my 1500 debut. Last weekend I enjoyed racing the 3000m at Doncaster although I was embarrassingly slow in a time of 11.28. Oh well I can only get better. I hope to return to running over the next few days and continue the battle to build up the weekly mileage.

The long road back...
Not a great deal has happened with my running over the last 2 years. I haven't been in any great form depsite doing the odd good race here and there. Various things have got in the way but somehow I have maintainted a bit of consistency and I have always pumped out at least 50kms per week without doing much more. This level of consistency has seen my run close to my best with far less training than I would previously require. A few weeks back I ran 14.48 for the Tan which is no great time but I was certainly happy given the lack of training I had done.
So now I have a bit more time up my sleave, its time to slowly build the weekly mileage up. Time to do some serious training and hopefully have a great 2012. I believe I have given myself the perfect platform to build from and I am hoping that by running some good races off very little training, I should be able to take my running to the next level when I can build up to 100km per week and hold that mileage for a reasonable period.
As we all know, to build the mileage back up, it must be done slowly and sensibly. I am currently on about 60km per week and I am hoping to increase that to 100km per week by the end of the year so that gives me just over 10 weeks to increase that much which should see me safe from injury.
Tomorrow I am heading to the Doncaster track to compete in the summer season for the first time. Although I will be out of my comfort zone with the shorter stuff, I am looking forward to it and hopefully by the end of the season I can run some decent 1500's, 3k's and 5k's. It also gives me a chance to run for Collingwood as I have missed several races since I first joined the club.
These days things are a bit more settled with my training in terms of who I train with. I have recently joined a great group which has some great runners, most of who are substantially faster than me so this has meant that I have had to be sensible with my intensity at training and also not do the volume the others are doing as even on the warm ups, they do more than someone of my fitness level can handle. I am sure that when I get a bit fitter I should be fine to do the entire session with them so I will just build up patiently.
Also I have settled down in terms of AV clubs. I did change clubs a few times but then decided that I wanted to just join one club and stay there over the long term. I made a great choice joining the Magpies and its a very stable club, has a great mix of runners and I am sure I will be there for quite a while.
So for the moment it's a case of building up patiently and hopefully the results will follow as expected.
